Wyke Amateur Golf Society swings into action for two local charities

TWO local charities have received a financial boost thanks to the work of members of the Wyke Amateur Golf Society (WAGS).

WAGS is a charitable society that raises money with the help of local golf courses, and its members also take part in charity competitions and raffles.

To date, WAGS has raised an impressive £32,900 which has been donated over the years to various local charities.

Last year, WAGS raised £2,500 which the members decided to split between the Shaftesbury-based breast cancer awareness charity BooBs and the dementia support charity Mindful Memory Cafes based in Gillingham and Stalbridge.

A WAGS spokesperson said: “Representatives from both charities attended a cheque presentation day held at Henstridge Golf and Leisure in May, where they could meet our members and speak to us about the great work they do.”

Mindful Memory Cafes supports those living with dementia or memory loss in North Dorset. Unlike many other local dementia charities, they have face-to-face groups and activities as opposed to just providing information or referral services.

The charity also hosts regular cafes in Gillingham and Stalbridge which are more than just a cup of tea and a chat: as well as quizzes and games, Mindful organise musical entertainment including music, singsongs and visits from pets, such as a resident of Mere Falconry.

BooBs aims to raise awareness of breast cancer in women and men and teach how to check your breasts to help with early detection.

Their aim is not only to promote awareness but also to support women, men and their families who have been or are going through treatment.

It can help financially with the added costs of going for treatment and appointments, as well as the costs of wigs, mastectomy bras, and more.

Above all else, it can help with emotional support and mental wellbeing by paying for therapies and counselling if anyone should need it. Their support group also runs once a month at Shaftesbury Youth Club, from 11am until 1pm on the third Saturday.
