Road closure will be in place for weeks after fire at derelict Sherborne property

AN “emergency road closure” is being put in place in Sherborne – at the scene of a “suspicious” fire that destroyed a listed building.

Dorset Council said it was closing the A30 from the junction of Acreman Street to the junction with Marston Road to “support emergency services responding and ensure public safety”.

“Inspections by both our building control surveyors and independent structural engineers, have identified that a more permanent road closure and diversion route is needed to enable emergency works to stabilise the building and to keep the public safe,” a spokesperson said.

“A revised road closure, including advisory diversion routes and any suspended parking arrangements, will now be put in place as soon as is practicable.”

The road is expected to be in place until May 17, with a signed diversion in operation.

“Road users are strongly encouraged to follow the signed diversion routes and allow extra time for their journeys,” the spokesperson added.

“We would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation while these necessary safety measures remain in place.”

The fire, at Newell House, was reported at just before 6pm on Sunday evening (April 26).

Firefighters fought the flames through the night, but could not save the roof of the derelict property, which collapsed.

An investigation is now underway in to the fire, which Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said was being treated as “suspicious”.
