Changes to village roads due to housing development ‘dangerous’, says resident

CHANGES to the layout of a busy road junction in Milborne Port could be dangerous, according to one resident.

Around 60 new homes are currently being developed on land at Wheathill Lane/Station Road, with a further 60 also planned a short distance away, also off Wheathill Lane.

To accommodate the developments, the junction of Wheathill Lane and Station Road will be closed, with the lane instead cutting across the new development.

Somerset Highways did not object to the planning application, which outlined the changes, when the plan was approved in July 2020.

However, resident John Turner claims forcing traffic onto a narrow cut through – which passes a planned ‘community hub’ on the new development – will make the area busy and potentially more dangerous.

“Once the development is complete, this short, S-shaped cut through will remain forever as the less-dangerous exit for Wheathill Lane residents, including all farm vehicles and the like, and across which school children will have to take their chances,” Mr Turner said.

“To compound this, the recent application for a cul-de-sac development of almost 60 houses … bringing with it another 100 or so cars, delivery and utility vehicles, adding to the chaos of two-way traffic in and out of the 100 yards of road between Wheathill Lane, Wheatsheaf Road, Gascoigne Park and Station Road.”

Somerset Council and Redcliffe Homes have been approached for comment.
