New lower speed limits set for ten towns and villages

DRIVERS in ten Dorset towns and villages will soon face a slower pace as new 20mph speed limits are set to be introduced across the county.

The measures follow applications from town and parish councils and will be in place before Easter.

The roads affected include areas in Gillingham, Pymore in Bridport, Beaminster, Briantspuddle, Lyme Regis, Milborne St Andrew, Upton, Sandy Lane and Victory Oak in St Leonards and St Ives, Winterborne Whitechurch and Ryme Intrinseca and Yetminster.

Dorset Council carried out detailed assessments of each application, with residents given the chance to comment, support or object through public consultation via the Traffic Regulation Order process.

Cabinet member for place services Jon Andrews said: “These new speed limits are the result of a thorough process that begins with community interest.

“Each application was carefully assessed against clear criteria to ensure that a 20mph scheme will give the maximum benefit for the affected communities.

“Our collaborative approach reflects our commitment to working closely with town and parish councils, supporting them as they bring forward requests… It aims to deliver the greatest benefit in areas where people live, walk, cycle or use mobility aids, helping to create healthier, safer streets for everyone.”

Dorset Council has received 20 more applications with other communities considering schemes for the next phase.

Once assessments are complete, public consultations will be carried out for successful proposals.

Since 2022, councils have been able to request lower limits where there is significant community support. For more information, visit www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/20mph-limits-and-zones
