TOWNS are being given the chance to put themselves firmly on the map as applications now open to become Dorset Town of Culture 2027.
The successful town will receive £30,000 in match-funding from Dorset Council to help deliver a year-long programme of arts, events and community activities designed to celebrate local culture and attract visitors.
The Town of Culture scheme, created by the Arts Development Company in 2024, aims to boost civic pride while supporting artists, businesses and community groups.
Previous winners have already seen thousands of people take part.
Bridport, the pilot Town of Culture in 2024, hosted 35 events attracting around 10,000 visitors, while Portland and Weymouth welcomed more than 15,000 people to 24 projects during their 2025 programme.
Wimborne is currently holding the title for 2026.
To be successful, towns must demonstrate a clear cultural vision, strong community support and a commitment to making events accessible and inclusive.
Applicants must also show how they will manage funding and create a lasting legacy after their year as Town of Culture.
Council’s deputy leader and portfolio holder for regeneration, economic growth and strategic assets Cllr Richard Biggs said: “Dorset Town of Culture is making a real difference in our communities.
“It’s helping towns celebrate what makes them special, while bringing people together and supporting local artists and businesses.
“The council’s funding is part of our wider commitment to support communities, grow the local economy and improve wellbeing through access to culture and the arts.
“By backing Dorset Town of Culture, we aim to help towns build confidence, attract visitors and create opportunities for local artists and organisations.”
Applications close on Monday, July 13.
