Sherborne Library – provisional opening date confirmed after asbestos work

SHERBORNE Library is set to reopen in August as work to make the building “safe for staff and visitors” continues.

Dorset Council said it is working towards reopening the Hound Street facility on Monday, August 3.

The library has been closed for months during work including the removal of asbestos and fire safety changes, which have now been formally signed off.

A council spokesperson said: “The council’s clear intention remains to reopen the building as Sherborne Library once all final works and safety checks have been completed.

“There are no plans to repurpose the building or use it for any other purpose. This remains Dorset Council’s commitment to the community. Based on current progress, the target reopening date is Monday, August 3.”

However, they said the opening date “remains subject to progress continuing as expected and all final safety checks being completed”.

Meanwhile, residents can access a number of library services through a temporary base in the foyer of Digby Hall, with additional services also offered at Sherborne Arts Centre.

“This will expand the temporary offer, particularly during the Summer Reading Challenge, providing additional space for activities and events,” the spokesperson added.

“We recognise how important Sherborne Library is to the local community and thank residents for their patience while this essential safety work is completed,” they said.

“Our focus remains on reopening a safe, welcoming and fully operational library for the community as soon as possible.”
