A BANNER has appeared in Mere as opposition grows to controversial plans that could see the town’s fire station close.
The large sign, photographed by local councillor George Jeans, has been put up in a show of support for Mere Fire Station and the firefighters who serve the community.

It comes as proposals to shut eight stations across Wiltshire and Dorset continue to spark concern among residents and civic leaders.
Under plans being considered by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, four stations in Wiltshire – including Mere, Bradford on Avon, Ramsbury and Wilton – could close, along with four in Dorset.
The issue has already reached Westminster, with South West Wiltshire MP Andrew Murrison raising concerns directly with Keir Starmer during Prime Minister’s Questions.
Dr Murrison warned that eight stations and 96 retained firefighters “face the axe” and called for urgent talks with ministers to explore ways of protecting services.
The Prime Minister responded by agreeing to arrange a meeting, saying he would ensure the matter is looked into.
Since the proposals were announced, campaigners have been urging residents to make their voices heard, with the banner in Mere the latest visible sign of local feeling.
The consultation on the closures remains open until May 15, with a final decision expected at the end of June.
Residents are being encouraged to take part and share their views before any changes are confirmed.
