Funding challenges force closure of carer support service

COMMUNITIES in Wiltshire and Dorset have described their sadness following the announcement that a key support services for unpaid carers is set to close.

Carer Support Wiltshire and Carer Support Dorset confirmed yesterday that its Board of Trustees has decided to close the organisation, with all operations due to end on March 31.

The decision was attributed to “ongoing and significant funding challenges”, with the charity saying it is no longer able to operate in a financially sustainable way despite exploring all viable options.

Carer Support Wiltshire and Dorset provide support to unpaid carers, a group often described as essential to the health and social care system.

The charity acknowledged the impact of the decision: “We understand the vital role our services, and the support we provide, plays in the lives of individuals, families and communities across Wiltshire and Dorset.

“We therefore recognise that this news will be distressing for many. We are also acutely aware of the impact this decision may have on carers and the people they care for, as well as on our partners, staff, volunteers and supporters who have worked alongside us.

The organisation said it will spend the coming months closing its services “in a planned and thoughtful way”, working with partners where possible to support carers during the transition and ensuring clear communication throughout.

The announcement has led to a strong response online, with current and former service users and staff reflecting on the charity’s impact.

Connie Shaw wrote: “Gutted, but I’m also grateful for the incredible work Carer Support Wiltshire has done over the years. Your dedication and compassion have made a real difference in the lives of many.”

Julie Louise said: “This is very sad news to hear. The loss to the often-forgotten carers, will be immense.”

Several people spoke about receiving help at critical points in their lives.

Sarah Bec wrote: “You helped me so much with help for my son a few years ago.”

Christine Leake said the support she received while caring for her mother during COVID “got me through a couple of very difficult years”.

Others highlighted the charity’s role as a source of advice and signposting.

As the charity prepares to close, its trustees said it had been “a privilege to support unpaid carers across Wiltshire and Dorset”, adding that they were proud of the positive difference made across both counties.
