Tributes to former Glastonbury councillor Alan Gloak MBE, who has died

TRIBUTES have been paid to former Somerset Council chair – and Glastonbury representative – Alan Gloak MBE, who has passed away.

As well as being a former county councillor, Mr Gloak had also been a member of Mendip District Council and Glastonbury Town Council.

He passed away on Friday, December 29.

First elected to the former Mendip District Council in 1995, representing the Glastonbury St Mary ward, Mr Gloak went on to join Somerset County Council from 2001 to 2017, serving as chair from 2005 to 2009 and as an Alderman.

He was also the mayor of Glastonbury from 2003 to 2004 and was awarded an MBE in 2010 for his services to Local Government.

Among those to pay tribute was the current chair of Somerset Council, Councillor Mike Best.

“It was with great sadness we learned of the death of Alan Gloak who served Somerset – and Glastonbury – with such dedication,” he said. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Bill Revans, leader of Somerset Council, added: “Alan Gloak’s contribution to local government in Somerset and to the community of Glastonbury was exemplary.

“He was always a convivial host, wit and raconteur and it was a privilege to have known him. He will be much missed.”
