Somerset pub bans mobile phones ahead of government alert test

DRINKERS in one Somerset pub will not be bothered by a nationwide alarm test this weekend – after mobile phones were banned from the premises.

The Camelot, in South Cadbury, has announced mobiles will not be allowed on Sunday, when an emergency alert is due to be tested on mobile phones across the country.

An alarm is due to sound at 3pm.

However, in a bid to prevent any disruption to punters, The Camelot has decided to enforce a ban.

“Many of our customers have said they don’t want the intrusion of a Government warning system on their phones this Sunday and so we have made the conscious decision to ask customers not to bring them or to turn them off when they enter,” said a spokesperson.

“Sunday is such a precious day for so many families who come to the pub to relax with friends and family and take a walk up to Cadbury Castle.

“We don’t feel it’s appropriate for families to have the intrusion at this time.

“If they would like to know what the alarm sounds like, they can listen to it via every social media and news channel – just not in the pub.”

Anyone who breaches the ban could do a good turn, however, as they will be asked to pop £10 in the pub’s charity box, in aid of The Alzheimers Society.
