DOG walkers in a village near Yetminster could eventually make use of a secure dog walking field if plans are approved.
Secure dog walking fields have become more popular in recent years as they provide a place for dogs to roam freely – ideal for those with reactive dogs or for those looking for a secure place to train their pooches.
Plans have now been submitted to change the use of part of an agricultural field at the junction of Ryme Road and Common Lane in Ryme Intrinseca.
The area, approximately 1.62 hectares (four acres), forms part of a farm in the village, and the parts not included in the application will remain in the usual cropping rotation.
The plans said: “There are currently no secure dog walking areas within the locality with the nearest being nine- miles away in Mosterton.
“The proposal has the potential to provide an important community facility for Ryme Intrinseca, Yetminster and nearby villages.“

The area will be enclosed by a six foot dog-proof stock fence. Pedestrian and vehicular access to the dog walking area has been proposed from Common Lane via the existing field access to an existing area of permeable hardstanding.
This will provide spaces for four cars. The facility will only be able to booked by one user at a time.
The proposals include leaving a strip between the hedgerow and the secure dog walking area fallow to support the growth of wildflowers and further soften the fencing and provide an additional area for wildlife adjacent to the hedgerow.
The plans added: “The proposal brings several benefits, enabling dogs that are at the stage of life where they need training in such safe environments, due to their age, nervousness around other pets or behavioural issues.
“Many dogs are not allowed to run off the lead for lack of recall, this facility gives those dogs an opportunity to run freely as nature intended.
“Pet owners will also benefit from the health and wellbeing benefits of being outside in an open setting.”
