Plans submitted for makeover at landmark Frome hotel

A LANDMARK Frome hotel could get an internal and external makeover if plans are approved.

Heritage Potential and Simple Simon Design, on behalf of Wadworth Pubs, have applied for permission for changes at the George Hotel, in Market Place.

The proposals – in two applications – include a makeover of the signage on the front of the listed building, as well as internal changes.

Internally, proposals by Heritage Potential include replacing and moving the bar, adding a glass screen between the entrance lobby and seating, and re-establishing a historic opening and steps between the bar and restaurant.

“The 1905 sales particulars describe the historic bar as a pitch pine counter with a marble top,” the application said.

“The existing bar has neither of these features and has a timber countertop.

“It is a modern replica of a traditional style, with no overall historical significance.”

The replacement bar would ensure the “scale and existing heritage significance will be preserved”, the plans added.

Externally, Simple Simon Design Ltd has applied for permission to change signage to the front of the building, which would see the current lettering removed, with ‘George Hotel’ painted on to the gilded fascia.

A flag sign would also be restored, and two air vents removed from an exterior wall, if the plans are approved.
