Honours even for Gillingham and Warminster

Warminster FC 1 – Gillingham Town FC 1

Gillingham Town visited Weymouth Street on Easter Monday to face a well-supported Warminster Town.

On a bumpy surface and with high winds, it was difficult for both teams to get the ball down and retain possession.

Gillingham dominated the 1st half and created a number of goalscoring opportunities but Warminster’s goalkeeper made one crucial fingertip save to keep the score 0-0 at half time.

Warminster came out after the break strongest and took the lead with a quick throw, releasing the striker whose first shot was saved well by Reece Bannister only for the rebound to be bundled home.

The goal forced Gillingham to increase the tempo and they began to get a foothold in the game. This new speed paid off and midway through the half scores were level thanks to a weaving run from striker James Boyland, who squared for Max Westlake to fire home and become the club’s top scorer.

With both teams tiring there were chances at either end to steal all three points but the game ended level.

A battling team display from the Gills with midfield duo Tom Jarvis and Sam Hodges putting in a great shift all over the park. A good point away from home takes Gillingham into their final home game of the season against Portishead on Saturday 15th April, which is sure to be a great atmosphere for anyone wanting to watch the match at Woodwater Lane.
