Have your say over 20mph speed limit plans in Gillingham

PEOPLE in Gillingham are asking for opinions over plans to apply for a 20mph speed limit in parts of the town.

Gillingham Town Council is formulating an application to introduce the reduced limit in certain areas, which will be submitted to Dorset Council for consideration.

And the council urged people to get involved – whether they support the proposals or not.

A spokesperson said the plan was aimed at improving “the safety and wellbeing of our community”.

Hard copies of the survey are available from the town hall.

Enforcement is the only way forward. To simply lower a speed limit that is not enforced is ridiculous. Also cyclists are not bound by these limits so they will carry on regardless.

I think 20mph is a good idea for residential areas where children may be playing but I think the two main roads Le Neuborg Way and Wyke Street should remain as it is. The council should also make it clear what the aim of the scheme is so the results can be measured.

I disagree with reducing the speed limit to 20mph around Gillingham. The roads are very congested anyway so it doesn’t make sense. There are so many traffic lights and roundabouts already it’s barely possible to get to 30mph. A better option would be to install a camera to promote safer driving. By reducing the speed limit it would also increase pollution and fuel consumption. The one place i would support it is all along the high street but that’s it.

Absolutely ridiculous, they should raise this road to a 60mph as it’s a single carriageway and it’s slow enough to get through the town as it is. Outrageous.

How many people have been ran down in Gillingham lately that’s right fuck all so why would you slow the traffic as soon there’s going to be a lotmore of it when they start kicking of the redrow site personally I prefer Shaftesburys approach which is 40mph all the way

We do not have an issue with speed. The few that do speed will still speed if the speed is lower. We have too many cars for the tiny roads yet more homes are set to be build maybe Restrict that. Leave the speed alone Gillingham is hard enough to drive though as it is

Would it not be better to spend the money in a vain attempt at maintaining the current roads, drains full of rubbish, weeds everywhere, typical nanny state, do the things that make no difference whilst the infrastructure falls to pieces, utter rubbish
