Drivers hit 48mph in 30 limit during police checks

NEARLY 50 motorists were caught speeding during a series of police enforcement operations across south Wiltshire last week.

Officers from the Mere and Tisbury policing team carried out speed checks in Warminster, Hill Deverill, Chilmark and Fovant, targeting roads with 30mph limits.

In total, 48 drivers were recorded exceeding the speed limit despite what police described as good driving conditions, with sunny weather and dry roads throughout the enforcement period.

The highest speed recorded was 48mph, with drivers caught travelling at that speed in both Hill Deverill and Chilmark – almost 20mph over the limit.

In Warminster, 13 motorists were stopped for speeding on Victoria Road with the fastest travelling at 39mph.

A further eight drivers were caught in Hill Deverill where five were offered speed awareness courses and three received fixed penalty notices.

In Chilmark, officers recorded 13 speeding offences on the B3089 Salisbury Road.

Ten drivers were offered speed awareness courses, while three were issued fixed penalties.

The largest number of offences was recorded in Fovant where 14 motorists were caught exceeding the 30mph limit on the A30 near Brook Street. The highest speed there was 40mph.

Police are continuing to carry out speed enforcement across the area and are reminding motorists that even relatively small increases in speed can significantly increase the risk and severity of collisions.

Drivers are being urged to stick to speed limits and remain mindful of other road users, particularly in villages and residential areas.
