Roof collapses at derelict Sherborne building after fire – with road closed

THE roof collapsed at a derelict building in Sherborne after a fire on Sunday evening (April 26) – with the A30 closed to traffic.

More than 30 firefighters were sent to the scene, at a three-storey building in Cornhill, at just before 6pm.

Crews from Sherborne, Yeovil, Wincanton, Martock, Crewkerne and Chard, together with the aerial ladder platform and a water carrier from Yeovil and a command unit from Gillingham attended.

“No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire will be investigated in due course,” a Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

The fire was out by around 10pm, firefighters said, with damping down continuing through the night.

“The building’s roof has collapsed, making the structure even more unsafe,” the spokesperson added.

And this morning, the road has remained closed with crews damping down as investigations continue.
