A NEW push to tackle the hidden impact of gambling harm is underway in Dorset, as police leaders warn the issue is increasingly linked to crime, mental health struggles and vulnerable people falling through the cracks.
Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick has announced the signing of a new charter with Dorset Police and ARA Recovery for All, aimed at improving support for those affected by gambling addiction.
It is the first agreement of its kind in the South West.
“Last week, I was delighted to sign an important charter recognising the harm inflicted by gambling and pledging support for those affected,” he said.
The move reflects growing concern that gambling is not just a personal issue but one that can spill over into wider society.
National figures estimate gambling-related harm costs England around £1.27 billion each year, with £162 million linked directly to crime.
Mr Sidwick said: “Having heard first-hand the impact harmful gambling can have, I know how it can lead to a range of other behaviours including crime-related issues if not recognised and addressed.”
Under the new charter, officers will receive better training to spot the warning signs of gambling addiction, while victims and offenders will be more quickly directed to specialist support services.
For frontline policing, the link is already clear.
Officers often encounter cases where gambling plays a role in theft, domestic abuse or wider safeguarding concerns.
The partnership with ARA – Recovery for All is already in place across custody suites and victim services, helping ensure people in crisis can access support when they need it most.
Mr Sidwick added: “The harmful consequences of gambling can have far-reaching effects. Through signing this charter, I hope we send a clear signal that support is available for those affected, and that they don’t have to suffer in silence.”
Police say the charter is just the beginning, with more work planned to strengthen awareness and prevention across Dorset in the months ahead.
