Person hospitalised after suspected arson attack in Sherborne

A PERSON was taken to hospital following a car fire that spread to a nearby property and fencing after a suspected arson attack in Sherborne.

Police were called to the scene, in South Avenue, Sherborne, by firefighters tackling a blaze at around 11.20pm on Thursday (April 9).

“A further report was received that the fire had spread to a nearby property and fences, with one person taken to hospital having suffered smoke inhalation,” a Dorset Police spokesperson said.

“Police have been liaising with the fire service and the cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate.”

Detective Inspector Rich Barnett, of Dorset County CID, added: “We are continuing to investigate this incident and I am appealing for any witnesses who have not already spoken to police or anyone with information that might assist our investigation to please contact us.

“I am keen to hear from anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area around the relevant time and would also ask residents in the vicinity of South Avenue and Lenthay Road to please review any home CCTV or doorbell camera footage from around 9.10pm to 11.20pm on April 9.

“From our enquiries, we also believe a male suspect from the scene may have sustained superficial injuries from the fire.

“I would urge anyone who has concerns around a man who has sustained suspected burn injuries in unexplained circumstances to please get in touch.

“Local officers have been carrying out additional patrols in this area since the fire and can be approached by members of the public with information or concerns.”
