Freedom of the Town awarded to long serving volunteer

A WOMAN described as the “heartbeat” of countless community events in Gillingham has been awarded the town’s highest civic honour after nearly four decades of voluntary service.

Gillingham Town Council has announced that Jackie Westbrook has been granted the Freedom of the Town, recognising 37 years of dedication to local organisations, young people and charities.

Jackie is presented with her award by Gillingham mayor Cllr Fiona Cullen.

Known to generations as “Red Bear”, Jackie has led Gillingham’s Sioux Beaver Colony since 1995, helping shape the lives of hundreds of children.

Parents and former Beavers say her energy and encouragement have left a lasting mark, with many young people gaining confidence and skills under her leadership.

Her volunteering stretches far beyond scouting.

Jackie has supported Gillingham Primary School and has been a familiar face at major community events including Gillingham Carnival, Gillingham Festival and The Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show.

For eight years she volunteered at Gillingham Day Club, and for the past 20 years she has served with Dorset Marshals, helping events run safely and smoothly.

She has also given her time to local charity shops, including Scope and Brainwave, and currently volunteers at the Weldmar Hospice Charity Shop in Gillingham.

In announcing the award, the town council praised Jackie’s “dedication, enthusiasm, and kindness”, noting that her contribution has touched the lives of many across the town.

The Freedom of the Town is rarely granted and recognises outstanding service to the community.

Residents have been invited to join the council in congratulating Jackie on what many say is a richly deserved honour – and to thank a volunteer whose quiet commitment has helped bind the community together for nearly four decades.
