Fire on open ground near Wincanton visible for miles around

A FIRE on open ground near Wincanton was visible for miles around yesterday morning (July 21).

Firefighters from the town was sent to the scene, in Stoney Stoke, to reports of a “fire in the open”.

“On arrival, we quickly decided we’d require additional assistance and requested an additional appliance which came from Castle Cary Fire Station and a water carrier from Yeovil Fire Station,” a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

The flames were extinguished soon after – with the smoke visible from as far away as Templecombe.
