A303 closed between Mere and Zeals after lorry catches fire

THE A303 between Mere and Zeals is expected to remain closed until 8.45pm tonight following a crash between a lorry and a car earlier this morning.

National Highways said a lorry left the carriageway and caught fire in a nearby field earlier this morning (July 21).

A spokesperson said: “The A303 in Wiltshire is closed westbound between the B3095 and B3092 near (Mere) due to a multi vehicle collision involving a car and a Heavy Goods vehicle (HGV).

“The HGV has left the carriageway and then caught fire in a nearby field.

“The recovery of the HGV will be protracted due to it’s position being approx. 10 feet down a grass verge. Several large trees will need to be removed before recovery can commence.

“Wiltshire Police are in attendance. National Highways area team are on scene to assist with traffic management.”

According to traffic monitoring website Traffic Update, the road is expected to remain closed until 8.45pm tonight.

Diversion Routes

Road users are advised to follow the solid square diversion symbol on road signs if heading westbound.

  • Exit the A303 westbound and follow the A350 to Shaftesbury
  • Continue along the A350 passing through East Knoyle and Sedgehill.
  • At the Ivy Cross roundabout take the B3081 (third exit).
  • Follow the B30181 passing through Gillingham, Wyke and Stock.
  • Rejoin the A303 westbound

    Wow just shocking that no-one was injured except a freighter who tried rescuing someone and fell and broke his leg
