Dozens of Wincanton households being evicted by MoD: Claim

THE rental market in Wincanton could be set for a shock as dozens of households face eviction from properties in the town, your New Blackmore Vale understands.

It is believed renters in more than 20 properties in the Kingwell Rise development have been given two months to leave their homes.

The properties are owned by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), which uses them to house personnel from the nearby Yeovilton base, and which says they are not an “alternative source of social housing”.

However, when they are not required by servicepeople and their families, they are let on short-term leases to civilians.

Now, dozens have been handed eviction notices – putting massive pressure on the rental market in the Somerset town.

An MoD spokesperson said: “Civilian tenants who rent homes that are temporarily not required for Service Personnel sign-up to two months’ notice to vacate.

“Sub-lets are always offered on short-term basis only and cannot be considered as an alternate source of social housing.”
