Yeovil MP uses maiden speech to encourage others – and references US election

YEOVIL MP Adam Dance has made his maiden speech in the House of Commons – and referenced today’s US Presidential Election.

In his speech, the Liberal Democrat MP laid out his journey to Parliament, and encouraged young people to pursue their dreams – as he himself did, despite being advised against such ambitions due to his ADHD and dyslexia.

He also highlighted the inspiration and encouragement given to him by the late Rt Hon Paddy Ashdown, both MP for Yeovil and leader of the party, and guidance he has received from David Laws, the last Liberal Democrat to represent the area.

Adam also drew attention to aspects of the history of his constituency. For instance, Crewkerne provided the sails and West Coker the ropes for the Victory, Admiral Nelson’s Flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar.

He covered the development in Yeovil town of Petters, an engineering company which expanded to the west thereby becoming Westlands, and later Leonardo which today is one of Yeovil’s major employers.

On his struggles growing up with ADHD and dyslexia, Adam told the house: “I say to young people everywhere, don’t let the system put you down, don’t let them tell you with ADHD and dyslexia you need to find suitable work as you won’t make anything of your life otherwise.

“With good teachers, and I have had several excellent ones, I’ve made it up through the political system to the top representative role for around 100,000 people.

“If I can make it in what I want to do, so can you.”

Adam also highlighted the auspicious date of his maiden speech – coinciding with the US election, where either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris will be voted in as the next president of the United States.

He said: “I hope for our friends in the USA appreciate the task that they have before them today not only for America, but for the rest of the world, to provide leadership in promoting opportunity and fairness for all.”
