Woman seriously injured after being hit by car in Sherborne

A WOMAN in her 70s has suffered ‘life-changing injuries’ after being hit by a car in Sherborne.

The incident occurred at around noon on Thursday (June 19), when a silver Kia Venga collided with a pedestrian in Cheap Street.

“The pedestrian – a woman in her 70s – sustained life-changing injuries and was airlifted to hospital for treatment,” a Dorset Police spokesperson said.

The driver of the car was not injured.

Police Sergeant Richard Stroud, of the Roads Policing Team, added: “This collision occurred in a busy street and I am keen to hear from any witnesses who have not already spoken to police.

“I would also like to appeal to anyone who may have captured anything of relevance on either dashcam or CCTV footage to please get in touch.

“Finally, I would like to thank the public for their patience while the road closure was in place as this allowed us to safely treat the injured woman and carry out a scene examination.”

Perhaps the Town Council will now consider closing Cheap Street to all vehicles from 0900 hours to make it safer for all pedestrians?

Yes, cheap street is always full of pedestriansof eldery age, pavements are very narrow. Everyone is shoping there. It would be good to make it just for pedestrians.

I agree, Cheap Street should be closed to traffic from 9 to 5. Special arrangements surely can be made for deliveries as not all shops have rear access. At 4, when the street re-opens, it is particularly hazardous for visitors, who aren’t expecting a sudden rush of cars. I’m amazed there haven’t been more accidents. A daytime closure works in other towns, so why not here.

Its pedestrian only access from 12mid day but you still see cars queuing & trying to drive down before the cut off time, many cars/vans are trying to drop off donations at charity shops, pick up/deliver heavy goods from shops etc.
If the council are considering changing the access times they should talk to shop owners first (especially those without access at the rear of the shops to see how practical having very early cutoff would be for deliveries considering many shops don’t open until 9am

The amount of varying sized A frames placed on the pavements are getting ridiculous. People with Prams, wheelchairs and walking aids are forced to get off the pavements into the road.
