FRIENDS of an ex-Navy serviceman who was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) have organised a fundraising event in Wincanton to help him and his family make some lasting memories.
Jon Over was diagnosed with MND – a degenerative disease with no cure that affects the brain and nerves and causes muscle weakness – and was sadly given a life expectancy of one to three years.
Jon’s friends Adam Vincent and Greg Hissey are determined to raise as much money as possible so Jon can continue to make memories with his wife, Marie, and their two girls, and as part of this, they have organised a fundraising night at Wincanton Sports Ground on May 31.
The event will feature a raffle and an auction, as well as a DJ, a dance floor and a pizza van. Attendees will be given a drink on arrival.

A Just Giving page which was set up to support Jon and his family has so far raised £17,395 – and organisers are hoping to reach £20,000 in total.
They said that money will also be used to help Jon’s wife with some financial stability in the future.
Greg Hissey said: “We are planning the fundraising night to raise money so he can make memories with his wife and two children.
“We also want to help his wife with some financial stability in the future. They recently moved into their dream home in Gillingham and are now faced with potentially losing this, which we want to help prevent.”
He added: “They are a wonderful family and there are so many people that want to ensure that they can spend some valuable time together making memories, whilst Jonny is still capable.
“If we can also keep his family in their dream home, then this would be remarkable.”
Daniel Walker-Hemmingfield, who set up the Just Giving page, said he is a “truly selfless person who has done so much for so many people.”
He said: “He is kind, caring, and full of compassion, a true friend to us all. As many of you will know, Jon is always there in your hour of need, going above and beyond for anyone.”
He added: “With Jon’s permission, I kindly ask for your support in raising money to help ease their burden during this difficult time.
“Your generosity will provide them with the comfort they need as they navigate through these challenges and allow them to make lasting memories as a family.”
