West Dorset pub scoops gong for best garden

A PUB outside Bridport has been handed an award for having the best pub garden in West Dorset.

The West Dorset Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has announced the Pymore Inn as the 2025 winner of the Pub Garden Award.

CAMRA members nominated the venue for the gong alongside a host of others, with an independent judging panel visiting all gardens.

After a thorough scoring system, taking into account factors such as accessibility, cleanliness and tidiness and general up-keep, the the Pymore Inn garden came out on top, the second time the pub has picked up the accolade, following a win in 2021.

West Dorset CAMRA chair, Bruce Mead, said: “It was a real pleasure to present the Pymore Inn with their award on a fine summer’s evening. The garden was a clear winner with our judges when they visited, and judging by the number of people there on Friday night, we’re not alone in thinking that.”

The garden at the Pymore is surrounded by a grade II-listed boundary wall and can sit up to 150 outside guest on well-kept bench seating.

There is a secure children’s play area, covered marquee seating and a large timber-clad outside bar near a fire pit for autumn nights.

Although a large green space, there is an ever-present fir tree that dominates the garden to give welcome shade on English hot summer’s days, the judges noted, as well as plants and shrubbery helping make it “a very appealing outside space that compliments the ivy-clad pub itself”.

Landlord, Alex Marshall, said: “We are utterly delighted at this year’s award, it’s very much a team effort and everyone appreciates its beauty, we even had a neighbour dead-heading the standard roses a couple of weeks ago.

“It’s great to be recognised by CAMRA as a lot of work goes into the maintenance and planting every year to make it an enjoyable space for everyone.”
