Tyre fire threatened nearby barn and woodland

FIREFIGHTERS tackled a ‘controlled’ blaze involving a large number of tyres which threatened to spread to a nearby barn and woodland.

Crews were called to Higher Street, in Lillington, near Sherborne and Yeovil, at around 11.38am on Wednesday morning (September 17).

Firefighters from Sherborne, Yeovil, Sturminster Newton and Wincanton, as well as water carriers from Yeovil and Bridport, were sent to the scene.

“Compressed air foam was used to tackle the fire, which involved a large quantity of tyres, and water was used to contain the fire and protect a nearby barn and woodland,” a Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

The fire was extinguished at around 4.20pm, they added.
