Trading Standards sting targets underage tobacco sales

SHOPS in East Dorset have passed a series of undercover checks designed to catch retailers selling tobacco to children.

Officers from Dorset Council’s Trading Standards team carried out test-purchasing visits at seven retail premises in recent weeks.

The operation involved a volunteer under the age of 18 attempting to buy cigarettes or tobacco.

Some of the businesses visited had previously been the subject of complaints about possible sales to minors.

Before the checks took place, retailers were sent written reminders outlining their legal responsibilities when selling age-restricted products and the importance of protecting young people.

During the operation, the underage volunteer attempted to make a purchase at each of the seven shops – but all refused the sale.

Dorset Council’s cabinet member for health and housing Cllr Gill Taylor said the result was positive.

“It is encouraging to see full compliance from all the businesses visited during this operation,” she said.

“Protecting young people from the harms of tobacco is a key priority for us, and responsible retailers play an essential role in that.

“We thank those who continue to follow the law and uphold high standards in our communities.”

Trading Standards officers say businesses caught selling age-restricted products to under-18s could face enforcement action.

Retailers in Dorset can access staff training and guidance on age-restricted sales through the Proof of Age Standards Scheme.

Some small businesses may be eligible to receive the training free of charge.

Anyone who suspects a shop is selling tobacco or other age-restricted products to children can report it to Trading Standards via Citizens Advice by calling 0808 223 1133 or using the Report It service online.
