PEOPLE curious about their roots now have expert help on hand as a new weekly Family History Surgery at Dorset History Centre opens the doors to the county’s past.
Dorset Council launched the service earlier this month to help residents trace their family stories, whether they are complete beginners or stuck on a stubborn branch of their family tree.
The surgery run every Friday afternoon from 1pm to 4pm, offering free, one-to-one sessions with a trained volunteer genealogist giving personalised advice.
Each appointment lasts an hour, with slots available at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.
Based at the Dorset History Centre, the surgery makes full use of one of the county’s richest historical resources.
The centre holds a vast collection of archives, from parish registers to maps and documents, which can help bring family histories to life.
By pairing these records with the knowledge of an experienced genealogist, the sessions aim to give residents the confidence and skills to carry on their research independently.
The initiative is part of wider efforts to promote local heritage and encourage people to engage more deeply with Dorset’s history.
Portfolio holder for customer, culture and community engagement Cllr Ryan Hope said: “The Dorset History Centre holds a wealth of records that help tell the story of our county and the people who live here.
“The new Family History Surgery is a great way to support residents in exploring that history for themselves.
“Whether someone is just starting out or needs help with more detailed research, these sessions will offer valuable, friendly guidance.
“I’m pleased to see this new opportunity encouraging more people to engage with our shared heritage.”
Sessions can be booked in advance and are already scheduled through to late February.
Appointments can be made online, by calling 01305 250550 or by emailing archives@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk
