Sustainable schemes launched in Sherborne thanks to town grant

A NEW sustainable initiative is launching in Sherborne this new year with the introduction of the Sherborne Cup, a reusable cup designed to reduce waste while celebrating the town’s heritage.

The project was inspired by Sherborne’s 2024 Sustainability Town of the Year award, which included a £15,000 grant to support environmentally focused projects within the town.

The Sherborne Cup is one of the first initiatives to be delivered using this funding.

The money will also support several other projects, including a pilot community transport initiative connecting Sherborne with surrounding villages.

Funding has also been allocated for a feasibility study into the creation of a nature conservation area, footpath and bridge at a site on the River Yeo.

Made from 90% recycled steel, the Sherborne Cup has been designed for long-term reuse.

In addition, the supplier has committed to planting a tree for every cup produced, further enhancing the project’s sustainability credentials.

The cups are available in white and blue and sold for £10 at offices, shops and cafés, with all proceeds reinvested to provide more cups for community use.

The design features artwork depicting several of Sherborne’s best-known landmarks, including Sherborne Abbey, Sherborne House, St Johns’ Almshouse, Cheap Street Church and the Conduit.

The illustrations were created by local artist Jayson Hutchins.

Jayson said he is “delighted” that his design is on the first Sherborne cup, and hopes that people get pleasure from the places he loves in the town.

As well as encouraging sustainable everyday habits, the Sherborne Cup is intended to serve as a gift or souvenir for residents and visitors alike and is suitable for both hot and cold drinks.

Sherborne Town Mayor, Cllr Jill Warburton said: “It is wonderful to see the final cup and know that it is sustainably sourced, re-usable and the design on it has come from a Sherborne artist.”
