Stone sculpture in honour of Sir Christopher Wren to be unveiled

ON October 21, 1632, architect, astronomer, mathematician and physicist Sir Christopher Wren was born in East Knoyle, Wiltshire.

Now, almost 100 years later, a landmark stone will be placed near the village of his birth.

At 11.30am on the anniversary of his birth, and 300 years after he died, the Rev Kate Mcfarlane will unveil The Wren Stone by John Maine as part of of ‘Wren 300’ celebrations and followed by a reception at St Mary’s Church.

Sir Christopher, who died in 1723, was the son of Dr Christopher Wren, the Rector of St Mary’s, who was responsible for the fine decorative plasterwork in the church.

“The house where he was born in the village is no longer standing, but this sculpture, carved from Portland stone, Wren’s favourite material, will mark the location nearby,” a spokesperson for the event said.

“John Maine RA, is a Royal Academician and has lived in the village for over 30 years.

“He is well known for his public sculpture in many countries ranging from Australia through China, Japan, Vietnam and India to key works in London and Scotland.

“More locally he has worked in Portland creating the Chiswell Earthworks, and recently he used Portland stone for his sculptural reliefs at Green Park Tube Station.”

His latest granite sculpture, ‘Turning Point’, was donated to Salisbury City Council by the Sir George Frampton Trust (2022) and has links with the cathedral, where he held an extensive exhibition in the close in 2017.

“Maine has carved this stone at his studio in the village with open access to local people and passers-by,” the spokesperson added.

“A rough quarry block supports an intricately carved geometric form, honouring the famous architect, mathematician and astronomer.”

Portland stone from Dorset was used by Wren for St Paul’s Cathedral, and many of his famous buildings.
