Somerton and Frome MP David Warburton resigns, prompting by-election: Reports

SOMERTON and Frome MP David Warburton is resigning – prompting a by-election in the Somerset constituency, according to reports.

The Conservative became embroiled in a sex and drugs scandal in April last year, having the whip withdrawn as an investigation by the parliamentary harassment watchdog got underway.

Now, the 57-year-old has told the Mail on Sunday he is standing down, claiming he was ‘set up’ and had been ‘naive and incredibly stupid’.

The controversy erupted after The Sunday Times published a photograph of the MP, apparently posing next to a number of lines of cocaine, as well as detailing alleged claims by two female aides.

Mr Warburton has consistently denied the allegations.

Now, he has accused the Parliamentary watchdog of being ‘terrified’ of the MeToo movement and that he ‘didn’t stand a chance’, the MoS reports.
