Sign up for council scheme to improve energy efficiency

HOMEOWNERS and landlords in Dorset are being encouraged to take a fresh look at how energy efficient their properties are with the launch of a new free online advice tool.

Dorset Council has unveiled Homewise, a digital service developed by the Energy Saving Trust, which provides tailored, impartial guidance on making homes warmer, cheaper to run and better for the environment.

The tool uses expert data to show residents which energy improvements are most suitable for their specific property.

By entering a postcode and answering a small number of questions, users receive a personalised action plan in minutes.

The plan can include recommendations such as insulation upgrades, LED lighting, heating improvements and solar panels, alongside clear information on potential costs and savings on energy bills.

There is no requirement to create an account, and plans can be downloaded straight away, with links to trusted advice and funding options.

The council says the tool addresses a significant local challenge, with around half of homes in Dorset currently rated EPC C or below, meaning they lose heat more quickly and cost more to keep warm.

Leader of Dorset Council and cabinet member for climate change Cllr Nick Ireland said: “We know many residents want to cut their energy bills and feel more comfortable at home.

“Homewise makes it simple to see which improvements could work best for your property, with clear costs and benefits.

“It’s free, quick to use, and tailored to Dorset homes. And while these changes also help reduce carbon emissions, the biggest win for households is a warmer, more affordable home.”

Laura Atkinson, business development manager at Energy Saving Trust, said: “Dorset Council is leading the way in empowering its residents to identify home energy improvements that will benefit them.

“We know the value of personalised advice in helping people to make informed choices on how to make their home cheaper to heat and lower carbon emissions.

“Our expert tool Homewise was created with this aim and we look forward to seeing it benefit as many people as possible.”

The launch forms part of Dorset Council’s wider Home Habitats campaign, aimed at helping residents make their homes warmer, greener and more affordable to run.
