A SHERBORNE schoolgirl has been recognised at the very highest level of the national cadet movement after being selected for a rare and prestigious Royal Navy honour.
Cadet Corporal Rosanagh “Rosie” Arbuthnott, from Sherborne Girls School Combined Cadet Force (CCF), has been named as one of just three First Sea Lord Cadets for 2026, placing her among an elite group of young leaders from across the UK.
The appointment is one of the highest accolades available to Royal Navy and Royal Marines cadets and is awarded annually to those who demonstrate exceptional leadership, commitment and service.
With more than 22,000 cadets nationwide in the Ministry of Defence–supported CCF, competition for the role is intense.
Rosie will represent cadets nationally, attend senior Royal Navy engagements and act as an ambassador for both the Navy and the CCF.
The role also offers unique leadership and educational opportunities beyond those available at school level.
General Sir Gwyn Jenkins KCB OBE ADC RM praised the new appointees, saying: “It is my great pleasure today to congratulate you on your selection as First Sea Lord Cadets, a programme that was established to recognise and develop outstanding young people with a strong interest in the Royal Navy and maritime leadership.
“This distinction reflects not only your talent and dedication, but also the leadership, integrity, and commitment to service that you have already demonstrated.
“You will gain a unique insight into senior naval leadership and the wider work of the Royal Navy.
“As First Sea Lord Cadets you will act as ambassadors for your peers, representing cadets at high-profile events, engaging with naval personnel, and promoting the values of service, leadership, and commitment.
“The year ahead will be both demanding and rewarding, offering you opportunities to develop your skills and broaden your understanding of the naval service.”
Rosie’s formal investiture will take place aboard HMS Victory this month, attended by her family, marking the start of a year representing cadets at national events and senior military occasions.
