A NEW town clerk is set to join the team at Shaftesbury Town Council.
Sarah Smith will begin her role as town clerk and responsible finance officer on July 7.
Town clerks are vital to the overall health of a council, as they ensure its business is conducted lawfully, as well as providing independent, objective advice and support for councillors and staff.
Clerks also oversee the implementation of projects in their town as well as managing budgets.
The town council said Sarah brings a wealth of experience to the role after spending 18 years in the field of town planning, and she has a strong background in residential, commercial, leisure, and rural projects.
She is a chartered member of the Royal Institute of Town Planning and holds a master’s degree in spatial planning.

She will be supported in her role by Billy Maddock, who has been serving as interim town clerk, and who will be taking up her new role as deputy town clerk.
The council’s previous town clerk, Brie Logan, stepped down from the role in May after seven and a half years.
Sarah said: “I am honoured to join Shaftesbury Town Council and collaborate with councillors, local organisations and residents to shape the town’s future.
“This role provides an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the community.
“I am pleased to be part of a proactive and forward-thinking council, and I look forward to helping the town’s success and growth.”
Shaftesbury Mayor cllr Virginia Edwyn-Jones said: “Sarah impressed us with a fantastic presentation, demonstrating a forensic assessment of our website and insightful reflections on the council’s strategic plan, Neighbourhood Plan, and other key initiatives.
“As a chartered member of the Royal Institute of Town Planning and with a master’s degree in spatial planning, Sarah’s skills in that area will be of huge benefit to our town.
“We are excited to see where her expertise, coupled with her infectious enthusiasm and excitement at joining our council, will take us. We anticipate good things ahead.”
