THE Shaftesbury community is being invited to take part in this year’s VE Day celebrations.
This year marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War and Shaftesbury is marking this with a special ceremony and celebration next Thursday (May 8).
People are being asked to assemble at the Town Memorial on Park Walk at 10.50am for a short service at 11am.
This will be followed by a wreath-laying service, with Shaftesbury Town Council, The Rifles and the Royal British Legion all expected to lay wreaths.
This will form a prelude to celebrations at Castle Hill at 6.45pm, complete with music, food and the lighting of the beacon at 9.30pm.
A spokesperson for the council said: “Join us as we commemorate 80 years since VE Day, honouring the bravery and sacrifices of those who served during the Second World War.
“Enjoy an evening of live music, delicious food and drinks, and the lighting of the beacon as we pay tribute to the VE and VJ Day generation.
“A meaningful event for all ages – come together with the community to remember, reflect, and celebrate.”
