Season opener at Wincanton Racecourse called off due to a lack of rain

A CHARITY race day at Wincanton has been called off – as not enough rain has fallen on the Somerset racecourse.

Sunday (October 26) was due to see the course host the Horatio’s Garden Raceday, in association with the spinal injuries organisation and Wincanton’s charity of the year, at a season’s opener.

However, an inspection this morning (October 24) revealed the ground remained unchanged – so races were called off.

“Despite a yellow weather warning in place and over 20mm of rainfall forecast, we received only 6.6mm overnight, meaning that the going remains unchanged,” a spokesperson said.

“With limited watering capacity, and no further significant rain forecast before Sunday’s fixture, we have taken the decision to abandon.

“We appreciate that this is frustrating for everyone involved, none more so than the team here at Wincanton who have been working so hard to get our season opener on, but the welfare of all our participants must always be our number one priority.

“All ticket purchasers will be contacted, and our team will be in touch with our hospitality guests later today.”

The course now hopes conditions improve ahead of the Badger Beer Ladies Day, on November 8.
