ALL COUNCIL school transport has been cancelled for tomorrow as the county braces for further heavy rain and worsening flood conditions.
The decision follows a Met Office forecast warning of localised heavy rainfall overnight from Thursday into Friday, with Dorset already dealing with widespread flooding, multiple road closures and fast-reacting river catchments.
The cancellation applies to all council-commissioned transport, including journeys both to and from school.
Dorset Council said the move was not taken lightly and acknowledged the disruption it will cause for families and schools.
However, the authority said it could not be confident that school transport could operate safely given the current conditions and the risk of roads becoming impassable without warning.
School transport cancelled across Dorset ahead of further heavy rain
Children who travel using public transport may not be affected, and families are being advised to check directly with bus operators for the latest information.
Individual schools will decide whether they remain open or close, with parents and carers urged to check updates from school leaders before travelling.
The council has published further guidance online as emergency services and highways teams continue to respond to flooding incidents across the county.
With river levels already high and ground conditions saturated, residents are being urged to take extra care, avoid unnecessary travel where possible and stay alert for further updates as weather conditions evolve.
