Residents invited to remember covid losses at Dorchester reflection event

AS THE UK marks the National Day of Reflection on Sunday (March 8), Dorset residents will gather in Dorchester to remember the lives and sacrifices that defined the covid pandemic.

At 10am, people are invited to an informal gathering at Memorial Corner outside County Hall, where a short programme of reflection will take place.

Now six years on from the start of the pandemic, the event offers what organisers describe as a chance “to pause, reflect, and acknowledge both the collective and personal experiences that shaped this unique period in our history”.

The morning will focus not only on remembrance, but also on the community spirit that carried many through lockdowns, loss and uncertainty.

It is also an opportunity to remember those who died, and the many people who made extraordinary sacrifices to support others.

Chair of Dorset Council Cllr Stella Jones MBE will attend from 10am to 10.45am and has encouraged residents to join her.

She will offer a brief reflection before a one-minute silence is observed.

Remarks will follow from His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant’s representative, Colin Weston MBE JP DL, and Shelley Rose of the Verwood Covid Community Group.

The setting itself carries deep meaning. Memorial Corner, renovated and extended in 2022, now includes 11 dedicated panels honouring front-line workers who lost their lives during the covid.

The redesigned space, with improved access and seating, has become a quiet focal point for remembrance in the county town.

Representatives from across Dorset’s communities are expected to attend, and members of the public are welcome. Those who wish to lay a tribute are encouraged to bring flowers.
