Pumps deployed in town hit by severe flooding

MORE pumps have been brought into a Dorset town still reeling from this week’s flooding

On Wednesday, resources from across the county were deployed to Blandford Fire Station, with crews carrying out welfare checks on residents along East Street and conducting rescues where needed.

Firefighters also delivered aid, including food and supplies, to residents caught up in severe flooding following Storm Chandra.

The disruption has affected public transport, with buses unable to stop in many areas of the town. Operator Damory has diverted several of its regular routes as a result.

Today, the Environment Agency’s South and South West team shared an update on social media, confirming that four pumps will now be set up to help alleviate some of the flooding.

The statement said: “Three extra pumps have been set up at Blandford pumping station in Dorset, with a fourth incoming.

“Groundwater levels remain high so the extra pump power will be a great help in reducing water levels.”

Yesterday, the Environment Agency warned that groundwater levels across Dorset and Wiltshire remained very high, with 30 of its 35 groundwater flood warnings in effect.

It reported that levels were as high, and in some places higher, than those seen in 2013/2014, when the area experienced widespread flooding.

“Some communities are seeing groundwater impacts for the first time,” the agency said.

Residents at risk of flooding have been advised by the Environment Agency to:

  • Use your personal flood plan
  • Move valuables from basements and cellars
  • If you have a pump, keep it serviced and working effectively
  • Clear drains and gullies around your property
  • Sign up for groundwater flood warnings
