POLICE are asking farmers in Dorset and Hampshire to be vigilant after it received intelligence that a large gathering of people are preparing to take part in an illegal poaching and hare coursing event this week.
The event is reportedly due to take place somewhere in the Horton and Sixpenny Handley area in Dorset and the A354 into Wiltshire or Hampshire between today (September 25) and Sunday.
The force believes the event could cross into the Hampshire border, including the New Forest or Test Valley areas.
“We would like to reassure members of the local community that we have extra resources ready to be deployed in the event of reports being received,” a New Forest Police spokesperson said.

“We would ask farmers and agricultural workers in our rural communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious incidents to us via 101 or via the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website.”
It added: “We will not tolerate any incidents of illegal activity. Any incidents of illegal activity should be reported to the appropriate authority as soon as possible.
“If you can, make a note of any vehicle details and a description of the people involved.
“Always consider your own personal safety first before approaching anyone you think might be doing something illegal.”
Farmers and land owners can ensure their land is secure by keeping boundaries well-maintained and secure, making sure gates cannot be lifter or have their fixing bolts removed, checking security equipment, use locking posts or temporary obstructions to control access points and invert and cap gate hinges while making sure fixing bolts are secure and using covered padlocks.
