A CANDLE left unattended ended up causing damage to a barn, workshop and three vehicles at a Dorset property.

Firefighters from Maiden Newton, Beaminster, Bridport and Yeovil were called to a blaze at property in Hooke on Saturday night.

“Considerable damage was caused to a barn including a workshop and three vehicles,” a Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

“The fire was caused by an unattended candle.”

No people or animals were hurt in the incident, the spokesperson added.

The service issued safety tips for people who use candles at home:

1. Make sure candles are on a stable surface, secured in a fire-resistant holder, and out of the reach of pets and children.

2. Keep lit candles away from flammable objects such as furniture, curtains, bedding and books. Also be careful with loose clothing and long hair.

3. Burn candles in a well-ventilated room, out of drafts, vents or air currents. This will help prevent rapid or uneven burning, soot and dripping.

4. Most importantly – never leave burning candles unattended. Put out candles when you leave the room and make sure they are fully extinguished before you go to bed or leave the property.
