Man who grabbed woman’s neck until she struggled to breath jailed

A MAN who violently abused and controlled a woman has been jailed thanks to the courage shown by his victim.

Junior Turaga, aged 21 and of no fixed abode, placed his hands around the neck of a woman at an address in Dorchester in October 2024 and tightened his grip until she struggled to breathe.

The woman disclosed a history of controlling behaviour displayed by Turaga, including checking her mobile phone and threatening to harm himself, her family or her car if she did not do as he wished.

Today, (Tuesday, February 3) he admitted offences of non-fatal strangulation and controlling and coercive behaviour at Bournemouth Crown Court, and was sentenced to three years in prison.

A restraining order was also put in place for seven years, preventing him from making contact with his victim.

PC Harry Chaplin said: “Thanks to the bravery shown by the victim in this case, we have been able to hold Turaga to account for the violent and abusive behaviour he displayed towards her.

“I hope the courage she has shown shows a message to victims of domestic abuse that they will be supported and we will do all we can to ensure perpetrators face justice.”
