“I know I will fit in”: Deaf group tackles isolation and builds friendships

A SUPPORT group helping deaf and hard of hearing residents combat isolation is changing lives across the county.

The Dorset Deaf Activities Group, which now has around 30 members, was formed after two profoundly deaf women who communicate using British Sign Language (BSL) were struggling with loneliness.

Now the group meets regularly, taking part in everything from pottery and basket weaving to painting, woodwork and poetry in BSL.

One member said: “Coming together in this group is good for my mental health. I know I will fit in with the others and not feel isolated.”

The group was brought together through Millbrook Healthcare, which provides specialist sight and hearing rehabilitation services on behalf of Dorset Council.

Millbrook has teams based in Dorchester and Blandford and supports residents across the county.

During Deaf Awareness Week, the organisation highlighted the importance of helping people remain independent, connected and confident in their communities.

Millbrook supports people who are deaf, hard of hearing or living with both hearing and sight loss.

Specialist staff offer personalised support at home, including assessments by phone, video call or face-to-face visits.

The service can also provide advice on equipment such as vibrating smoke alarms, amplified telephones and TV listening devices.

The importance of social connection was underlined during a recent Millbrook coffee morning at the Pavilion in the Park Café in Poundbury where members spoke openly about the challenges of isolation and communication barriers.

Attendees said more people learning BSL, clearer face-to-face communication and simpler public service information would make everyday life easier.

Cabinet member for adult social care Cllr Steve Robinson said: “Deaf Awareness Week is about us listening, understanding and removing those everyday barriers. With the right support, people can stay independent, feel confident and live full lives in their own homes and communities.

“Whether you are seeking more information and support for yourself or a family member, please reach out to Millbrook, they are there to help you get the support that suits you.”
