Frome College chemistry students praised for ‘fantastic’ efforts in UK contest

CHEMISTRY students at Frome College are celebrating after scooping awards in a UK competition.

Results have been unveiled in the first round of the contest, with A level students in Years 12 and 13 at the college all being awarded certificates in the Chemistry Olympiad.

From the 20 young people who took part, they achieved nine bronze awards, one silver and one gold.

Dr David Smith, from the college, said it was a ‘fantastic achievement.

“The students showed great endeavour and resilience to complete the test paper which contained questions of undergraduate difficulty, while being based on the A level chemistry our students have been studying,” he said.

“As a department, we considered it important to revitalise our Chemistry Olympiad participation, which we hadn’t entered for a few years, and it was fantastic to see our students really engage with the challenge and show themselves to be equal to other students across the country.

“We hope to enter the 56th Olympiad when it opens for applications in October.”

Students Gareth and Melissa gained the gold and silver awards, respectively.
