Former home of Dorset firm Moores Biscuits could become eight properties

THE former home of Moores Biscuits could be converted into eight properties.

The site, at Bakery Lane, Morcombelake, was home to the famous bakery between 1880 and 2006, when the firm relocated.

Now, a planning application has been submitted to Dorset Council by Stags on behalf of David Winship, to redevelop it and create eight new dwellings.

The plans would see a number f buildings developed, including the roofs being replaced.

“The buildings which comprise the former biscuit factory were in use for this purpose from their establishment in 1880 until demand meant that the business had to relocate to a more suitable site in 2006,” the application said.

“As mentioned, the site is comprised of a mass of conjoined buildings of 19th century origin with some late 20th century additions to the east.”

It said redeveloping the site, alongside the A35, would be suitable as an access to the new homes, which would have parking spaces for 10 vehicles.

“The site lies disused as it no longer serves its purpose as the biscuit factory,” the application went on.

“As such, it is a distinct possibly that this prominent landmark which forms part of the region’s culinary heritage could fall into disrepair and face complete collapse.”

It added: “The scheme also seeks consent for the formation of parking spaces for 10 vehicles and also for the associated drainage works necessary to facilitate the conversion.”

The application said funds generated through the development would benefit the Dorset economy, as it would be reinvested in the biscuit business.

“It is anticipated that any monies accrued from the sale of the site will be returned to the existing biscuit-making business and it is anticipated that a planning application for further development in the aforementioned new site and as such will create additional employment space for local residents,” the plan said.

“The additional revenue generated from the extended business will be of benefit to the council in the form of additional tax revenues generated through the extension of the existing business.”

Moores is known around the world for its famous Dorset Knob biscuits and more.
