Dozens of firefighters tackle blaze in thatched roof of Gillingham house

A DOZEN fire crews – around 60 firefighters – tackled a blaze in the thatched roof of a property in Gillingham.

Crews were called to the incident, in Langham Lane, at around 2.15pm on Monday afternoon (January 8).

Fire engines from Wincanton, Castle Cary and Yeovil were among those sent to the scene.

“Crews worked hard to strip away the thatch and extinguish the fire, which had taken hold within the roof space,” a spokesperson from the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

“The occupants were safely outside when we arrived, and a salvage operation has brought their possessions to safety.”

However, they said the fire had left the property “severely damaged” after it started accidentally in the chimney.
