Dorset residents living longer than most of the country

DORSET is growing older and faster than much of the rest of the country bringing profound challenges for families, communities and care providers.

New figures from Dorset Council reveal that almost a third of the county’s residents are now aged 65 or over.

The median age stands at 52.3, significantly higher than the national average of 40.5.

Over the past decade alone, the number of people aged 80 and above has risen by 23% – and that figure is forecast to climb by a further 38% by 2034.

SilverStars Care say longer lives are, in many cases, healthier ones. Women aged 65 in Dorset can expect to enjoy another 22.5 years in good or fairly good health, with men likely to have nearly 20 years.

But increased longevity also brings greater demand for support.

Age-related disabilities, mobility difficulties and chronic health conditions are becoming more common, meaning many older people, even those in generally good health, require help with daily living.

As pressure mounts, experts warn that traditional models of care may not be enough.

Dorset is predicted to face a shortfall of 2,800 specialist care bedspaces by 2038.

At the same time, nearly a third of unpaid carers in the county are themselves aged 65 or older, while many younger adults are moving away for work, placing additional strain on families.

Live-in care is emerging as one solution. Allowing people to remain in their own homes while receiving personalised, round-the-clock support, it offers continuity and familiarity that can be crucial for mental wellbeing and independence.

It can be tailored for long-term conditions, dementia care or short-term recovery following illness or surgery.

Providers such as SilverStars Care say demand is set to grow sharply in the coming years.

As Dorset continues to age, ensuring access to flexible, home-based care may prove vital in protecting independence, dignity and quality of life across the county.
