Council offering tradespeople chance to join national accreditation scheme

A ONE-OFF scheme has been launched offering local tradespeople the chance to join a national accreditation scheme at half the usual cost.

Retrofitters installing insulation, low-carbon heating or other energy-saving measures can apply to join the nationally recognised Buy With Confidence scheme, which is approved by Trading Standards and helps residents find vetted, reliable tradespeople.

The discounted offer, made possible through UK Shared Prosperity Funding, is available until March 1 and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

It is open to new businesses based in Dorset, providing energy retrofit services, who have been trading for at least six months and successfully pass the Buy With Confidence audit.

Leader of Dorset Council and cabinet member for climate Cllr Nick Ireland said: “A common concern we hear from residents wanting to carry out energy efficiency improvements to their homes is that they struggle to find trusted tradespeople to do the work.

“The offer will drive real change by connecting residents with trusted local retrofit installers, while boosting Dorset businesses by helping them reach new customers.”

The discount covers the Buy With Confidence application fee and 50% of the first year’s membership, making it easier for businesses to gain accreditation and build consumer trust.

Cllr Ireland added: “Around half of Dorset’s homes have an EPC rating of D or below, causing them to lose warmth rapidly and resulting in higher heating costs for residents.

“Making our homes more energy efficient is not just good for the environment, it can also make a real difference to household bills, helping residents save money over the long term.”

Retrofitting involves upgrading buildings to meet modern energy standards, including wall, roof and floor insulation, double or triple-glazed windows and doors, renewable energy systems such as solar panels and heat pumps and improved heating, air sealing and ventilation.
