Council marks Ukrainian conflict and calls for more host families

THE Ukrainian flag was flown above County Hall this week as Dorset marked four years since the start of the war.

Dorset Council has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukrainians living in the county and is urging residents to consider opening their homes to those fleeing the conflict.

To mark the anniversary yesterday (February 24), the blue and yellow flag was raised as a symbol of solidarity – mirroring events held across the UK, where communities gathered to remember those who have lost their lives and to recognise the resilience of the Ukrainian people.

Since 2022, Dorset has welcomed 1,143 Ukrainians seeking safety. Of those, 712 remain in the county.

According to the council, 175 guests are currently living in hosted accommodation, while 537 have moved into rented homes.

A further 26 people are expected to arrive in the near future.

With some hosting arrangements naturally coming to an end, the council says it is continuing to look for new host families – both to sponsor new arrivals and to support re-matching for guests who need alternative accommodation.

Cabinet member for customer, culture and community engagement Cllr Ryan Hope said: “Four years on, the war in Ukraine continues to have a big impact on individuals and families who have been forced to leave their homes.

“Dorset’s residents have shown remarkable generosity in offering safety, stability and kindness to those arriving in our county.

“As we mark this anniversary, we want to reaffirm our commitment to supporting Ukrainian guests for as long as they need our help. We continue to ask anyone who can offer a home to consider becoming a host.”

The council said the anniversary was not only a moment of reflection but also a reminder that the need for support remains ongoing.

Residents interested in becoming a sponsor or host can find out more through the council’s Ukraine response webpages.
